Visiting Students

Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT) accepts candidates who wish to study, conduct research, or take courses in a specialized field as either Special Research Students or Special Auditing Students (collectively referred to as "Visiting Students").
Admission is subject to application review and compatibility between the applicant's field of study and TUT's academic areas.
Visiting students can conduct research or study at TUT while continuing their studies at their home university.
There are two categories of visiting student programs: Special Auditing Students, who take classes at TUT to earn academic credits, and Special Research Students, who primarily engage in research activities.
1. Categories of admission
A) Special Auditing Student:
Visiting students who wish to take classes at TUT and earn academic credits (at either the undergraduate or graduate level).
■ Undergraduate level (Japanese-taught courses only)
■ Graduate level (Japanese-taught and English-taught courses)
*Please note that TUT does not offer any English-taught programs at the undergraduate level.
B) Special Research Student:
Visiting students who wish to conduct research at TUT at the graduate level only.
2. Eligibility
A) Undergraduate level students:
Applicants must have graduated from high school, completed 12 years of formal education (or equivalent), and be approved by their home university.
B) Graduate level students:
Applicants who have graduated from a university or hold an equivalent qualification, and have received approval from their home university.
*In either case, if you wish to take classes or receive research guidance in Japanese, you must have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to a score of 280 on the "Japanese as a Foreign Language" section of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU). We recommend that applicants have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) at Level N1.
If you wish to take classes or receive research guidance in English, you must have sufficient English communication skills. The following scores are recommended: TOEIC 590, TOEFL iBT 61, TOEFL PBT 500, or IELTS 5.5 or higher.

C) How to pay
Special Auditing Student:
Once admitted, students are required to pay the tuition fees for all courses they are approved to take.
Special Research Student:
Tuition fees should be paid at the start of your research period. Payments may be split by semester (April-September and October-March).
D) Notes
Please be aware that all fees are non-refundable. Students are expected to cover additional costs, including daily expenses, transportation, and other personal expenditures.
E) Exchange Students from Partner universities
Exchange students from our partner universities are also exempt from tuition fees. Please note that the number of students eligible for exemption is limited according to the terms of each exchange agreement.

Notes:
- All application documents must be prepared in Japanese or English and printed on A4-size paper. If a certificate is issued in a language other than Japanese or English, a certified translation must be attached.

6. Application deadline
Applications must be submitted no later than four months prior to the desired month of enrollment.
- ● For April enrollment: by the end of November of the previous year
- ● For October enrollment: by the end of May Please note that this refers to the date by which all documents must arrive in the Educational Affairs Division.
※Visiting student applicants must be officially nominated by their home university no later than one month before the application deadline. (Nominations should be submitted by email from the home university to the Educational Affairs Division at TUT, and must include the applicant's name, department, course level, desired admission category, and intended study period.)

7. Admission of students
Following acceptance by the university's selection committee, students will be granted admission upon completion of all necessary procedures within the first month of their scheduled study or research period.
8. Notes

To qualify for a student visa, Special Auditing Students must attend a minimum of 10 hours of classes per week.

Applicants must list the names of three faculty members from TUT on their application form, as Special Auditing Students are required to contact faculty members, and Special Research Students must have a supervisor at TUT.

Accommodation in the International House is available only to visiting students from partner universities, and only if vacancies exist. (Students from institutions without a student exchange agreement with TUT are responsible for securing their own off-campus accommodation.)

Special Research Students are permitted to audit courses at TUT for research purposes, but they cannot receive academic credit for these classes.

Transcripts for Special Auditing Students
Transcripts will be mailed by TUT only to the administrative office of the home university for Special Auditing Students from institutions with an exchange agreement. Please note that transcripts will be issued according to the schedule below and cannot be issued before these dates:
Spring Semester (April-September): After October 1
Fall Semester (October-March): After April 1
