Congratulatory Address to the September 2024 Graduates
Interim President, Akihiro Wakahara
Toyohashi University of Technology
September 20, 2024

Congratulations to all those who have completed the master's and doctoral programs at Toyohashi University of Technology. This year, 24 students in the master's program and 6 students in the doctoral program received their degrees from Toyohashi University of Technology. We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to their families. I would also like to express our deepest gratitude to our supervisors and all those involved for their guidance and support to date.
I would like to express my deepest respect to all of you who have devoted yourselves to research and achieved results while the new coronavirus infection has had a great impact on your social and student lives.

First of all, you have spent a lot of time and a great deal of effort completing your graduate program. Today is the day that your efforts will be rewarded. At the same time, completion of the program is a fresh start for your next challenge.I am sure that you have learned and deeply absorbed a great deal of knowledge at this university, but in addition to lectures, through seminars, experiments, practical training, and trial and error in research, you have learned not only knowledge but also how to conduct scientific research, including setting research goals, methodology for conducting research, and research management including collaborators. These are the real assets you have gained at our university. I believe that the wisdom and knowledge you have acquired here can be applied to the various challenges you will face in the future. However, at the time you arrived the university, COVID-19 restricted your contact with professors and your colleagues, and you must have had difficulty starting your research. Fortunately, humankind has rapidly developed digital technology, which allows us to receive high-quality education and research anywhere in the world, such as online and remotely. The emergence of new technologies and science in this age of pandemics has truly turned a pinch into an opportunity. There is a famous Japanese proverb, "災い転じて福と成す", in English, "Turning misfortune into fortune". The meaning of this proverb is to take advantage of a calamity that befalls you and turn it into a seed of happiness. When something bad happens, by thinking, "I will never make the same mistake again," you will instead feel happy. I hope that all of you graduates will use the wisdom, strength, and courage you have gained during this difficult time to contribute to your future lives and society.

Second, please continue to treasure the network of friends, faculty, staff, and community members that you have gained at TUT. Although your time at university is short, only a few years, please extend the connections you have made at the university into new ones, and maintain your networks in the global arena by utilizing cyberspace. There will surely come a time in your life when you need the support of your friends. At that time, the network you have developed at TUT will come in handy. Also, please maintain strong ties with the Alumni Association of TUT.

Finally, once you enter the workforce, your studies do not end. Rather, we can say that the real work begins now. You have learned the basics of technology and research while you were students, but from now on, it is important that you make use of this knowledge for the benefit of humanity and contribute to the world. To do this, it is important to have strong passion and the ability to take action based on the basic academic skills you have acquired so far. I hope that you will continue to have the passion to accomplish what you want to do, no matter what it takes. You are intellectually, physically, and humanistically gifted young people who have completed the rigorous educational and research programs at TUT. I hope that you will have the courage to do what you are good at and what you want to do, without fear of failure, and most of all, with passion. The future of the world depends on young people. You, the youth, are the world's treasure. TUT will always support you.

That concludes my congratulatory remarks.
