Congratulatory message from the President of Toyohashi University of Technology to students entering in October 2025

President, Akihiro Wakahara
Toyohashi University of Technology
October 2, 2025

Congratulations to all new students on your enrollment. This October, Toyohashi University of Technology welcomed 22 students to its master's programs and 7 students to its doctoral programs. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to the families who have devotedly supported these students.

You have now taken your first step toward becoming highly skilled engineers and researchers capable of making an impact on the global stage through your graduate studies at Toyohashi.  Here, I would like to offer some advice to help you make your graduate school experience at this university even more meaningful.

First, graduate studies primarily focus on gaining knowledge and experience through research. For both master's and doctoral programs, we recommend building on your liberal arts education while acquiring specialized knowledge. This will prepare you for future opportunities. When setting your research objectives, it is crucial to read papers in related fields to understand which institutions are most advanced and what the fundamental challenges are.

Based on these efforts, develop a research plan that builds on your strengths, adopting an open-minded and broad perspective free from preconceptions. Discussions with your supervisor and lab members are essential to cultivate this broad perspective, as are debates with collaborators and conference participants, and investigating trends in other fields. In my experience as an instructor, I have seen many proactive students with a broad perspective achieve significant growth after graduation. Enjoy your research life and engage in lively discussions!

Our faculty members are passionate about their research and often travel abroad. Students have many opportunities to present at international conferences held overseas while still attending the university.

I encourage you to present your work at an international conference and exchange ideas with world-class researchers and students from other countries. I also encourage you to visit world-renowned researchers.

Even if it is only for a short period, observing research environments at other institutions and engaging in discussions will boost your motivation, broaden your horizons, and take your research to the next level.

As I mentioned, graduate school life centers on research, but becoming an exceptional researcher also requires excellent communication skills. It is important to absorb knowledge in your specialized field, but it is also important to acquire cultural knowledge and gain real-world experience. Since you will be studying at a Japanese university, be mindful of building personal networks by engaging with Japanese culture and interacting with local communities. The friendships, networks, cultural knowledge, and experiences you cultivate through these efforts will undoubtedly benefit your future career.

Throughout your long research career, you won't always get the results you hope for, and there will be difficult times. What helps us overcome those challenges is our strong desire to achieve something and our passion to see it through. Passion for research can sprout at any time and in any place. Some of you may already possess it. For those who haven't yet, keep exploring diverse interests until it does. When you find a clear goal, challenge yourself without fear of failure. We are always cheering you on!
I offer these words as congratulations to all of you.
