Toyohashi University of Technology Congratulatory Message
to Students Enrolling in October 2023

Oct. 2, 2023
Dr.Kazuhiko Terashima
President, Toyohashi University of Technology,

Congratulations to all of you on your enrollment. Toyohashi University of Technology is pleased to announce the October enrollment of 26 students in the Master's Course and 13 students in the Doctoral Course for this academic year. To the parents and guardians, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on the enrollment of your children, whom you have worked so hard to nurture. I would also like to extend my congratulations to the professors who have been guiding them and to the students in their laboratories.

On May 8 of this year, new coronavirus infection was classified as a category 5 infectious disease in Japan, and after the classification as a category 5 infectious disease, the isolation measures have been completed, and there are no longer any requests to refrain from leaving the house or restrictions on employment. In addition, no one is identified as a "person in close contact" with the disease and is not required to refrain from leaving the house. However, as with other infectious diseases, it is advisable for those with symptoms such as fever to refrain from going out and recuperate in order to prevent the spread of infection. We still cannot let our guard down. The University will make every effort to ensure that you are able to study at the University with peace of mind, not only through face-to-face lectures, but also through flexible management of lectures, including online lectures and hybrid lectures, in addition to measures against corona. Now, on this blessed occasion, I would like to extend my congratulations as the President of the University.

Those of you who have entered graduate school are very different from high school students and undergraduates. You are advanced engineers and researchers who will be active as leaders in industry and academia in the future, both domestically and internationally. Therefore, I hope that you will study at our graduate school with a considerable amount of determination.

First of all, in order to increase your expertise and education, please attend lectures focusing on your own interests and selecting those that you may need in the future. AI and digital subjects are necessary for students of all specialties, and we urge you to study at least the basics, even if you are not a specialist. Recently, terms such as "Chat-GPT" and "Generative AI" have emerged. Artificial intelligence can supplement various human tasks, improve work efficiency, and even exceed human capabilities. On the other hand, there are negative aspects of AI use, such as copyrights, privacy leaks, and plagiarism. The University does not deny AI research or AI use, but hopes that students of science and engineering will study AI actively and apply it effectively. It will be very useful for research and other purposes. However, please pay attention to the ethical rules of AI. The university has published various warnings on its website and in e-mails to students, so please always check them.

Now, research is the main part of graduate school study. You will discuss your research theme with your faculty advisor, decide on your research objectives, goals, and policies, and conduct theoretical analysis, computer simulations, and experiments. You will have discussions with your advisor, seminars in the laboratory, discussions with fellow laboratory members, discussions with external collaborators, presentations and discussions at academic conferences, writing and publishing papers in journals, and finally, submitting your master's thesis and doctoral dissertation. The master's program lasts two years, and the doctoral program lasts three years. Through these, you will achieve remarkable growth. In my 25 years as an active professor, about 300 students has graduated and completed under my supervision. In that experience, I have seen many students who have actively and diligently learned grow spectacularly upon completion. I hope you will enjoy your research very much. I have a few requests.

First, when you begin your research, please be aware of the world and read and study the world's top-class papers on your chosen topic. It is important to be aware of where in the world your research theme is most advanced and to advance your own research.

Second, go abroad every chance you get. Our university often presents international conference papers abroad during graduate school. Our professors are very active in research and travel abroad more often than at other universities, and they often take their students with them when they present their papers, so students are in a privileged environment. I highly recommend that you give presentations abroad and exchange opinions with world-class researchers and students from other countries. If possible, you should also visit the world's top universities, laboratories, and researchers in your field. And during your graduate school years, you should study abroad for about six months to a year at a world-class research institution in your field. If you don't have time, you can do so for as short a period as a month. These will increase your research motivation, broaden your horizons, and ultimately advance your research.

Third, if you are interested in furthering your academic studies, please enter a Ph. During the three years of the doctoral program, you will further broaden your academic field and acquire deep expertise, broad insight, and leadership. During this period, you can also improve your technical and human skills by studying abroad and participating in joint research with industry, etc. When you are employed by industry in the future, you will be gladly accepted as a doctor who is useful to society. In comparison to employment, doctoral programs require tuition and living expenses, but in recent years, the number of scholarships offered by our University has been increasing, and student support programs such as tuition waivers and research expenses support have been enhanced. In addition, industry has become more aware of the importance of the program, and students are able to find employment in a wide range of fields.

As a final request, what supports you to continue your research? The key to support your continued research is a strong "I want to do this" goal and the passion (in Japanese, Jyonetsu) to carry it out. Passion is the key to continuing your research. When and where does the desire to do this and the never-ending passion come from? It varies from person to person. Some people naturally decide what they like because of their childhood upbringing. Some are moved by reading books and make up their minds. Some are moved by encounters with others and decide what they want to do. In my case, when I was in my third year of college, I was so moved by a lecture by a control engineering professor that I began to study and research systems and control engineering with a passion. I then became his apprentice. As you can see, you never know when and where your love and intense passion will be born. Until that time comes, you should be interested in various things and study them diligently and without haste. If you find a clear goal that you want to achieve, challenge it with passion and without fear of failure. We are always supporting you. Please spread your wings.
