Congratulatory Address from the President of Toyohashi University of Technology to students entering in October 2026

President, Akihiro Wakahara
Toyohashi University of Technology
October 2, 2026

Congratulations on your admission to Toyohashi University of Technology! We are truly delighted to welcome 39 students into our Master's program and 5 students into our Doctoral program today. I also want to share my warmest congratulations with your families, whose wonderful support has helped you reach this important day.

By starting your graduate studies, you are taking your first big step toward becoming global engineers and researchers who can make a real difference in the world. To help you make the most of your time here, I would like to share a few thoughts.

Graduate school is all about learning through active research. Whatever your degree program, I encourage you to build on a broad foundation of general knowledge alongside your specialized field. When setting your research goals, read widely to see what leading institutions are working on and what the big remaining questions are.

Approach your work with an open mind, stay flexible, and make the most of your unique strengths. Building a broad perspective requires active communication--not just with your lab members, but with international collaborators, conference attendees, and researchers in other fields. In my own career, I have seen that students who keep a broad outlook and take initiative grow tremendously after graduation.

Our faculty members are deeply involved in international research, and we offer many opportunities for you to present your work abroad. I strongly encourage you to participate in international conferences, talk with top researchers from around the world, and visit leading research centers. Seeing these environments for yourself will boost your motivation and take your research to the next level.

Remember that great researchers need excellent communication skills and a deep understanding of the world, not just technical expertise. Expanding your cultural knowledge and life experiences is just as important as studying your core subject.
In research, you will sometimes face difficult times and unexpected results. What will carry you through is a strong desire to achieve something and a true passion for discovery. That passion can spark at any time. If you haven't found it yet, keep exploring your interests until you do. Once you find your goal, take on the challenge without fearing failure.

Our faculty and staff are always here to support you. I wish you all the very best as you begin this exciting new journey!
