Congratulatory Address to the September 2026 Graduates
President, Akihiro Wakahara
Toyohashi University of Technology
September 25, 2026
Congratulations to all those who have completed the Master's and Doctoral programs at Toyohashi University of Technology. This year, 26 students in the master's pro-gram and 13 students in the doctoral program received their degrees from Toyohashi University of Technology. I wish to express my deepest respect to all of you who have dedicated yourselves to research and achieved results. I also extend my heartfelt congratulations to your families. I am deeply grateful to your supervisors and all those involved who have provided guidance and support up to this day.
You have devoted considerable time and tremendous effort to complete your grad-uate studies. Today is the day your hard work comes to fruition in the form of a de-gree, and at the same time, it marks a new starting point for your next challenge. I am sure that during your time at TUT, you have acquired a wealth of knowledge and learned a great deal. Through lectures, seminars, lab experiments, and the tri-al-and-error process of conducting research, you have not only acquired knowledge but also learned how to conduct scientific research--including setting research goals, developing methodologies for implementation, and managing research projects with collaborators. These skills are the true assets you have acquired at TUT. I am con-fident that the wisdom and knowledge you have gained here will be of great help to you as you tackle the various challenges you will face in the future.
Today's international community appears to be shifting from globalization toward the formation of blocks. Amid this trend, scarce resources and products are being in-corporated into national strategies, causing global activities to stall temporarily. However, alternative solutions and new technologies are currently being developed. These examples demonstrate that it is possible to overcome adversity by leveraging science and technology.
Japan has a famous proverb: "人間万事塞翁が馬", this means, "Since happiness and misfortune in life are unpredictable, there's no need to get too caught up in the ups and downs of the moment." Even if you face unexpected difficulties in the future, I hope you won't get too caught up in the superficial pros and cons of things or the ups and downs of the moment. Instead, I hope you'll maintain a positive outlook and ask yourself, "What gift will this experience bring to my future self?"
The greatest asset you have gained at this university is the connections you've made with friends, faculty and staff, and members of the local community. While your time at university is a very brief period in the grand scheme of life, the friendships forged as you passionately pursued your goals will serve as a source of support throughout your life. Furthermore, your connection to the university's alumni association offers a powerful advantage that relationships limited to your own generation simply cannot provide. When you need support to solve problems, the friendships and networks you've built at the university will serve as a strong source of support.
Finally, the fields of study and research you pursued during your college years may have stemmed from your intellectual curiosity. However, from now on, I ask that you put the skills you have acquired to work for the well-being of the global community. To achieve this, in addition to the skills you have cultivated thus far, strong passion and proactive initiative are essential. No matter what difficulties you face, please continue to pursue your goals with passion.
The future of the world rests on you, the younger generation.
This concludes my congratulatory address.
