Congratulatory Address in the Entrance Ceremony

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019
Takashi ONISHI
President, Toyohashi University of Technology

On behalf of all the faculty, the staff, and the students, I would like to express our heartfelt welcome to all of you to the graduate school of Toyohashi University of Technology, TUT.

Taking various opportunities, I have been talking about the meaning of Gijutsu Kagaku, technological sciences in English, which is used in the name of our university to express the subject we are all pursuing. The technological science is different from "science and technology" often used in the modern society. Like social sciences or natural sciences, we are seeking the principles or laws of technology under the name of technological sciences. By mastering technology through understanding the scientific foundation supporting it, we can apply the existing technology to other fields or develop itself further and even create new technology leading to social innovation.

Therefore, our university lays out the motto of "Master Technology, Create Technology".
"Master Technology" implies that you must learn lots and work hard to catch up with the latest development of technological sciences to be a professional engineer. Of course, our faculty will provide you with many excellent lectures, training programs and individualized advices on the advanced sciences and technology. I would like you to learn them in a proactive manner. This is "master technology".

"Create Technology" requires more to you. "Create Technology" is a self-sustained activity to open up a cutting edge stage of the development of technology. It is important to be ready always to challenge to solve things unknown. Your own dream or ambition will be an important driving force towards creativity.
Today, creativity seems to be particularly important. There are many difficult issues facing us, such as energy, environmental, water, sanitation problems as shown in SDGs of the United Nations. Those problems will not be solved only by our existing knowledge and technology. We have to develop novel science and technology with our creativity to solve current difficult global issues, and obviously you are expected to foster your creativity during your graduate program which now starts.

Do your best in the graduate program keeping in mind "Master Technological Science, Create Technological Science".

In addition, I would like to mention that we are now promoting a new program to open further our university to the rest of the world. Globalization is a very important key word for the new era. We are conducting Super Global University Program, or top global university program in Japan, in which bilingual lecture program has been expanded. New dormitory where students share multi-cultural ways of life are in use. Through the new program, the ratio of non-Japanese speaking students in the campus has been increasing further. Therefore, you are expected to play more important role to change our university towards the new direction, which is globalization.
Regarding globalization, I would like to mention Rugby World Cup in which Japanese team has been showing very good performances. You may be realizing that the members of the representative team of Japan are a bit different from other sports, or even ordinary society here. More than half of the team members were not born in Japan, nor grew up here. But we Japanese don't call them guest players, but we consider they are indispensable members of the team. I think we Japanese have been trying to remove conscious barrier to stress differences between Japanese and non-Japanese. Rugby World Cup becomes another great turning point for us to move from narrow minded nationalism to open minded globalism. And your activities here will be strong driving force to push this movement in this particular campus.

Finally, in addition to your study on technology, I hope you will learn lots about Japan during your stay here. That makes your life in Toyohashi more pleasant, enjoyable and fruitful. Also, if you meet any difficulties, don't hesitate to contact our faculty and staff who have enough experiences to support international students.
I would like to conclude my speech with saying again, Congratulations and welcome to you and I wish your productive and enjoyable life in Toyohashi.

Thank you for your attention.
