Pygmy Seahorses |
In recent years, with the advances made in digital photography, underwater photography has been made much easier and more accessible. Now scuba divers can choose from many brands and models of compact digital cameras that offer optional underwater cases. With most cases waterproof down to 40 meters, you can take your camera along on most dives that any sport diver would do. Taking underwater pictures is as easy as point and shoot, and you have the ability to instantly review the picture you have just taken. In addition, with the larger memory cards today, you can take several shots of each subject to ensure you get that perfect picture.
One animal that many underwater photographers are thrilled to get a picture of is the pygmy seahorse. The pygmy seahorse is a very small variety of seahorse that can be found in the Coral Triangle area of Southeast Asia. It is usually less than two centimeters in height and has almost perfect camouflage. Because of their camouflage, they are extremely difficult to find. Luckily, your local dive guide will usually know where they are located so you can narrow down your search. Often hiding in gorgonian coral (a kind of sea fan), it can take several minutes of close examination to finally find the shy animal, so hopefully your tank will have enough air left.
I have been fortunate to find and take pictures of pygmy seahorses on a few occasions. It can be difficult to get the camera close enough without the pygmy seahorse moving out of focus. Ocean currents and tidal surges can also make it difficult to keep the camera stable while taking the shot. And if there are other divers, you have to wait your turn. The pictures here are two of my better tries and they were both taken in the Philippines. I hope you enjoy them and I strongly encourage everyone with a love of the sea to get your scuba license and try underwater photography.
