20 3. A Decade of Reorientation: From the 40th to the 50th Anniversary 3.1 Educational Strategy The basic philosophy of education and research, as well as the educational objectives of the University, are as follows. Basic Philosophy of Education and Research: The mission of the University is to provide education and conduct research in technological science, an academic field that develops new technologies through the exploration of the science that underpins technology. Under this mission, the University primarily admits graduates of Colleges of Technology and high schools, places emphasis on graduate education, and fosters practical, creative, and leading engineers and researchers, while at the same time conducting research in technological science that will shape the future. Furthermore, the University respects social diversity and strengthens collaboration with local communities. Through these efforts, it aims to become a world-class engineering university open to the world. Educational Objectives: Based on the above basic philosophy of education and research, the University seeks, through education in technological science, to foster leading practical and creative engineers and researchers who possess rich humanity, a global perspective, and a spirit of coexistence with nature. As part of general education, the University offers instruction in the humanities and social sciences, the natural sciences, information technology, environmental studies, and MOT, as well as in communication-related fields, including foreign languages primarily English, and engineering ethics. As part of specialized education, it provides instruction in fundamental and advanced specialized subjects and advanced specialized subjects in coordination with graduate education. Through lectures, exercises, experiments, and practical training, the University cultivates the academic ability necessary to understand the essence of phenomena, as well as independent and flexible thinking, as well as creativity. In addition, by requiring practical training in order to foster a practical technological sense suited to real-world issues, the University aims to train engineers equipped with practical, creative, and leadership abilities. Education has been conducted in accordance with these basic principles and objectives, and further strengthening of these activities has become increasingly necessary in light of changes in circumstances both within Japan and abroad. With its mission at the core, the University has reviewed its educational objectives in each medium-term goals period and responded to the demands of the times. The past ten years correspond to the third and current fourth medium-term goals periods, and the major goals and educational initiatives during these periods are as follows. Third Medium-Term Goals Period (FY2016–FY2021) 1. To realize a vibrant multicultural and global campus where everyone can learn from one another regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or gender. 2. To foster human resources capable of creating innovation by mastering technology while also exploring the science that supports it. 3. To strengthen interdisciplinary research capability through application development based on an open application approach. 4. To create new knowledge and technologies that enrich the lives of people around the world and return the resulting achievements to society. 5. To provide sufficient research time for researchers at the University and to create a dynamic research environment through promoting researcher mobility at appropriate stages of their careers.
