Title:"The circadian system, high-fat diet and eating behavior"

Outline:The circadian rhythm is the endogenous time keeping mechanism which controls behavior and physiological rhythms in most organisms. Light and food availability are periodic environmental factors that entrain circadian oscillators in mammals. Entrainment is believed to improve fitness and survival by allowing anticipation of predictable daily changes in environmental conditions and coordinating precise phasing of rhythms in behavior and physiology. The circadian rhythm is known to be resistant to environmental disturbance and stress. The period of the rhythm is temperature- and nutrition-compensated, thus it does not change under different temperature and nutritional conditions. Recently, it has been recognized that disruption of the circadian rhythm is one of the risk factors for metabolic disorders. We have also found that diet alters circadian organization, which may result in dysregulation of metabolism. I will present our recent study of the acute effect of high-fat diet on the circadian system and discuss a possible strategy to improve circadian disruption which may contribute to metabolic disorders.
