President, Prof. Yoshiyuki Sakaki,
inauguraed in April 2008

TUT, Toyohashi University of Technology was founded in 1976 by Japanese government as a national university. And the aims of TUT are to conduct research on advanced technologies and to educate students in such technologies with an emphasis on graduate studies.

We have around 2,100 students including undergraduate, master's and doctoral course students, 250 teaching and research faculty members, and 150 administrative personnel.
Although our university is small compared to most of the other Japanese national universities, we focus our efforts on furthering the progress of advanced technologies such as robotics, information technology (IT), electronic and optical devices, advanced materials science, environmental sciences and technologies, as well as others.

From April of 2004, our university, as well as all other national universities, has been reformed into the National University Corporation, which is an independent organization from the government.
This reformation will give the universities more freedom in the management and future planning of their institutions than before.
Making use of this opportunity, we are planning to rearrange the present departments so that we can expand the present fields of research and education to cover new interdisciplinary areas of science and technology.

One special advantage of studying at our university is that we offer opportunities to gain practical experience in industry as an intern for two months. This takes place during the course of undergraduate studies after BS thesis work and before entering a master's course. The purpose is to familiarize you with Japanese industry and help you to understand the real working environment many students will eventually face. This is one example of how our university emphasizes the practical use of technology.

The city of Toyohashi is located in the central region of Honshu, the main island of Japan, and is easily accessible by Shinkansen bullet train from both Tokyo and Osaka. Toyohashi is not far from Nagoya, an industrial city of 2 million. The climate is mild and the people are kind. Toyohashi has a population of 370 thousand, making it a comfortable place to live. You can experience both modern city life and country living in Toyohashi city. I believe you will find a lot to like in Toyohashi when you join TUT.
