The Multimedia Center was established in 1996 to drive the Multimedia University Pilot Study (MUPS)-project that aimed to develop new teaching methods and new educational systems that include course training materials for a multimedia age.
As a center for multimedia services at TUT, the Multimedia Center has been equipped with the latest high-performance multimedia systems, such as a 10Gbps ATM-LAN, a Giga-Ethernet and a dedicated host computer for graphics that enables high-speed image data transmission for research, lectures and video conferences. The Multimedia Center has also supported collaborative studies and interactive lectures over networks with other universities and technical colleges through ISDN links and a satellite communication system.
With respect to course training materials, many easy-to-understand contents have been developed in such areas as; image processing technologies, 3D computer graphics, virtual reality (VR) and multimedia editing. This is made possible by applying multimedia content-development systems that include a Web-based training (WBT) tool supported by the Multimedia Center.
In 2002, a new project to drive the application of IT to higher education, including distance education, over a high-speed intra-network, was started with the collaboration of the university and technical college members. The Multimedia Center leads this project and supports educational systems, tools such as WebCT, course training materials, and distance education.
