Nowadays, machine civilization plays a very important role for the convenience and comfort of human life as well as productivity in all sectors of industry. It is often accompanied, however, with various problems such as noise, safety, waste of energy, and deterioration of the environment; these are becoming an increasing concern. To resolve these problems, new advanced technologies are absolutely vital for developing ideal or optimal machinery which features high efficiency, silence, cleanliness, safety, reliability, manufacturability and recycling.

As a result of rapid advances in the latter half of the last century, the modern, complex urban infrastructure and facilities are not satisfactorily reliable for protection against natural hazards such as earthquakes, flood, unusual weather, and so on. This course further focuses on the research of civil-infrastructures as well as new types and materials for mega-systems composed of various structures, ranging from architecture to public works.
