The Department of Mechanical Engineering aims to cultivate the advanced knowledge and skills that are required to design, develop, manufacture, and manage various machine systems and educate students to become practical and creative engineers. The curriculum consists of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and the other subjects, such as automatic control, tribology, numerical analysis, that are essential for mechanical engineers.

The Department is divided into three divisions: Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Energy Conversion Engineering, and Machine Design Engineering. The Thermal and Fluid Engineering Division deals with heat transfer, two-phase flows, fluid power systems, powder technology, and molten salt reactors. The Energy Conversion Engineering Division deals with turbulent flows, combustion and combustors, automatic controls, and laser-measuring devices. The Machine Design Engineering Division deals with solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, tribology, computational mechanics, and structural optimization.

All graduate and senior undergraduate students are enrolled in one of the three divisions. They can choose the division in which they wish to carry out their studies. They are fully supervised in their research activities by department members.
